Lignans, also known as complex carbohydrates or polysaccharides, are an important part of high-fiber foods that come from plants. Flax seeds have 75-800 times more lignans than as many as 68 other fruits and vegetables. They are the richest available source of plant lignans. Organic flax seeds are a vegetarian and gluten free source of omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA's). Since our bodies cannot produce EFA's, they must be obtained from our diet.
